What Makes Royal Jelly Special?

What Is Royal Jelly—and Why Is It Used in Skincare?

Most people are familiar with honey and beeswax, but Royal Jelly is something entirely different. This creamy substance is produced by worker bees and plays a very special role inside the hive.

Royal Jelly is best known for its connection to the queen bee. That story has made it one of nature’s most fascinating ingredients—and the precious final touch in our signature My Everything Cream formula.

What Exactly Is Royal Jelly?

Royal Jelly is a naturally creamy substance produced by young worker bees to feed developing larvae within the hive.

During their earliest days, all bee larvae receive it. A larva selected to become a queen continues receiving an abundant Royal Jelly diet throughout her development. Once she becomes the adult queen, she is constantly attended and fed by worker bees.

This extraordinary level of care is how Royal Jelly earned its regal name.

Royal Jelly Is Not Honey

Although both come from honeybees, Royal Jelly and honey are not the same.

Honey begins with nectar collected from flowers. Bees transform and store that nectar inside the hive as a food source.

Royal Jelly is produced by the bees themselves to feed developing larvae and the queen. It is typically pale, creamy and slightly pearlescent—not golden, sticky or syrup-like like honey.

Beeswax is different from both. It is the material bees use to construct the honeycomb that forms the structure of their hive.

Why Is Royal Jelly Used in Skincare?

Royal Jelly naturally contains a complex mixture of water, proteins, amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, minerals and small amounts of vitamins.

In skincare, it is valued as a conditioning ingredient and is often included in formulas created to leave the skin feeling soft, smooth and cared for.

We do not treat Royal Jelly as a miracle ingredient. No single ingredient needs to do everything. What matters is how thoughtfully selected ingredients work together as part of a complete formula.

The Precious Final Touch

When we created My Everything Cream, we intentionally kept the formula simple. Instead of adding water, fragrance, fillers and a long list of unfamiliar ingredients, we selected three ingredients with distinct roles.

Nilotica Shea Butter creates the rich, creamy foundation.

Shea Nut Oil gives the formula its silky glide and helps soften the skin.

Royal Jelly completes the blend as the precious final touch.

Together, these three ingredients create a concentrated cream that melts easily against the warmth of your skin and leaves it feeling deeply conditioned without requiring an overly complicated routine.

A Formula Created With Care

My Everything Cream began during a time when Essence’s skin needed a gentler and more thoughtful approach to daily care.

We wanted to create something beautifully uncomplicated: a fragrance-free cream made with only a few carefully chosen ingredients. The result was a versatile formula that can be used on the face, body and hair.

Because My Everything Cream contains no water, a little goes a long way. Apply a small amount to slightly damp skin to help seal in the moisture already present after bathing or cleansing.

From the Hive to Our Signature Formula

Inside the hive, Royal Jelly represents extraordinary nourishment and continuous care for the queen. Inside My Everything Cream, it completes the three-ingredient formula at the heart of Sheair Butters.

It may be the final ingredient in our spotlight series, but it has never been an afterthought.

Royal Jelly is the precious final touch.

A Thoughtful Note

  • Royal Jelly is derived from bees. If you have a known sensitivity to bees or bee-derived ingredients, review the complete ingredient list before use. As with any new skincare product, patch testing on a small area of skin first is recommended.
